Description

This 1883 blank Portland Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association stock certificate was found in the records of the Cape Elizabeth Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association and suggests, as does historian William B. Jordan, Jr., that the Cape Elizabeth association, founded in 1891, modeled itself after the Portland organization. The stock was worth $1 per share. Stock purchases funded the planning and construction of Our Lady of Victories Monument located in Portland's Monument Square. At the top of the certificate are the words "Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori."They are Latin words which translate into English as "It is sweet and right to die for your country."
